I think of a question really hard in my mind and close my eyes. I actually see it spelled out "yes" or "no". It only works with yes or no questions. I do the same thing. I focus on a yes or no question, and I feel for a positive or negative feeling. If the question has to do with objects, I simply attach the objects to the feelings before focusing. Sometimes I get an 'I don't know' feeling. I've always just assumed I'm asking my subconscious what it thinks of the situation, to get another opinion on the situation. I do this too!
