keepin’ it even
I have something of a compulsion to keep things “even” as between the two sides of my body — e.g., if my right hand accidentally bumps a railing while walking along, I often will tap my left hand in the corresponding place, so that it feels something equivalent to what the right one felt. It doesn’t apply to every situation and I can ignore it with effort, but it’s a dangerous tendency when doing things like operating any heavy machinery requiring different activities from (and causing therefore different sensations to) each side of the body.

8thd!! I do this too! also, if I got pinched on the right side of my body, then I pinch the left, but the right side pain has faded already, I’ll pinch the left, and then pinch both at the same time
fifth’d!
And I thought I was the only one.
Sixth’d! Oh my gosh, SO glad I’m not the only one!
My boyfriend will purposely say pinch my left arm so I will do it to my right one. I thought I was the only one too!
Me too. If I brush my hand against my side, I must then do it with the other side. And if I do it wrong, then I have to try again, and also balance it out by doing it on the original side again.
You people are freaked me out. I never know that people use brains and their body for something sensles as this. Now if you stop doing it you will have a problem with your speech and motoric functions will be disrupted. Good luck with this.
I used to do this when I was a kid! I don’t know when I stopped, but when I’ve tried to explain it to other people they have had no idea what I’m talking about. Thank you.
lol i didnt know other poeple did this..i find it really annoying when i cant even things out >.<
Okay, so yea….this happens to me, too, hence the fact my friend Linny send this to me on Stumble Upon. Here’s a story for you. No one ever told me that hot water in a glass pitcher will break the pitcher and I had done it several times before without any negative effect. Well, on December 31, 2006, I did just that with my entire family in the room. Did any of them try to stop me, NO! My two young nieces were like two feet from me (which was my biggest worry once the breaking happened). The pitcher broke and boiling water went all over my leg. Long story somewhat shorter, I went into shock and ended up in the ER in my underwear and a robe that I had to hold away from my leg so as to not touch it (which means it didn’t really hide anything). On the way to the ER, my sister said these words to me, “When we get back, you better not try to even this out.” I had to laugh.
HAH!
I had this one when I was a kid. I grew out of it. I think it’s much more common than people suspect.
So happy to know it’s not just me! Been doing this all my life and one of my sons does it, too.
If I’m poked in the side, or open a door with one hand.. pretty much have one side of me experience a ‘sensation’ or do something, sometimes I’m fine, but other times, I can’t do anything unless I even myself out. I was in a restaurant with two friends and one kicked me, and I couldn’t get up to leave until one of them came back and did the same thing to my other side… I feel like I’m going to fall over if I’m not balanced out.
I do this also! And I am comforted everyday that not only is everything even but I am also comforted to know that I use better grammar than this person…. Who is the senseless/”sensles” one?

I’m not the only one! I’ve had it since I was little and I call it the other side being “jealous”.. sometimes I can ignore it but if it’s a strong sensation I often have to do the other side, including pain. People know this and will offer to do the other side if I can’t do it myself.
4th!
I call it balance. It applies even to something painful. My wife will sometimes harrass me by coming up and tapping me on one side and seeing how long I can resist tapping the other side.
This is my problem exactly!
third’d
Yes! Exactly. Whenever I’ve told people before, I’ve gotten so many strange looks.
Same goes for my feet. If I can feel that I’ve stepped on a large crack with my left foot, I have to find another with my right.
Wow. I’m not the only one. This is crazy.
honestly this is exactly my biggest thing ever. i’ve never been able to explain it until i read this.
i tried to explain it to a boyfriend once, how the pressure goes away on the left side and i have to equal that pressure on the right side or something.
my ex used to tickle me all down one side and watch me do it to the other side. GAH
Crazy crazy! I never imagined this was something other people did! I wonder what the reason behind it is? It’s a pretty freaky sensation, when one side is “less” than the other. I used to do this all the time, even when thinking about my mom and dad.
