clean chalk board = sane students
Ever since I started school at 5 years old I have had an obsession with the teacher erasing the chalk board entirely. Most would rub the eraser around but leave stray lines and continue writing. I would stare at the stray lines and it would drive me crazy the remainder of the class. I would get hot and get headaches. I am 22 years old and in college and nothing has changed.

Me too! I will stare at that one spot the entire time and lose complete focus on anything the teacher is saying. I’m 29 and in law school and things STILL haven’t changed.
i HATED that! it used to make me nuts. and it didn’t help if they noticed later and rubbed out the little remaining mark(s) with their finger. that was WORSE because then there was a little smear there. ugh.
I am the EXACT same way. I would often lose an entire lesson because of one forgotten line.
oh my god! i haaaaaate that!! i hate it! i’m in college too, and i feel like i should be able to just ignore it, but i can’t!
I’m in college and it irks me to see how carelessly instructors/professors wipe their chalkboards. I mean, there’s this blatantly obvious stray line that you forgot to erase. Are you blind?
I TEACH in a college and this same thing drives me nuts. I am still an obsessive board eraser, only now we have whiteboards and it is heaven. They erase a lot more cleanly. I actually get sad when I have to teach in a room with a chalkboard.
i know i hate that too!!!
I do the same thing, I hate the traces of the words lift on the board, when you can still read it because they did not push hard enough.
I hated when they (the teachers) so half assed erased. It always seemed so chalky and messy. My favorite days of all time were when they had a student actually wash the board with a sponge and water. Ahh, It was all fixed and fresh. Then, alas, it would start all over again.
[college-age too]…I usually have this overwhelming urge to ask the professor if they need my help erasing it completely. I’ve never had the guts but sometimes they sure tempt me. Also, my respect for my math professor went up higher one day because she came in and had to spend 5 minutes cleaning the whole board ’cause it was so dirty from a previous class. lol
Boy, you would’ve like my grade 8 english teacher; when he wrote on chalkboards (in calligraphy), he would press extremely hard to eliminate excess dust, and every time he wanted to erase it (if he made a mistake, or if he just wanted to change the writing), we would pull out a sponge from the bucket of water he kept nearby, clean the board, and then squeegee the board dry
omfg me too! I can’t stand a line of chalk on a board x_x This is awful.
You are not alone on that one!! My french teacher in 10th grade would always rub a tiny bubble of notes off the board and continue writing…it made no sense to me and made my skin crawl !! I swear my grades dropped everytime she did it !
you would love my math teacher from high school…. he used to turtle wax his white board… it looked better than new ever day….spotless…. it was like a mirror…. you could see urself in it.
YES!
ABSOLUTELY! Stray ink marks always grate on my nerves. I’m in college now and I don’t think it’ll EVER change.
Agreed. Clean the fucking board, slob! How can these people teach us if they can’t even wipe a board? Other students hated when they were tasked with spraying the board with water and cleaning it. I would stay late and redo the spots my classmates missed. Fucking chalk. I hate it. All streaky and dry…
I always thought I was the only one!
I hate when my teachers do that, I usually ask them to erase it or tell all the people around me to get them to stare at it too.
So I don’t feel so lonely/weird…
Ooh this drives me mental too! At one point I told my maths teacher to wipe the stray line off, and he refused just to wind me up. He actually laughed about it. Heck, I got mad then…
SAME! I just want to run up their and erase the line myself. Sometimes when I’m writing on the board and not everything gets erased w/one eraser stroke I tell myself that I need to stop being so obsessive and just leave it, but it’s absolutely impossible
William S. Burroughs anyone?
ahh me too! same with my friend. sometimes we just put our hands up and ask the teacher to rub out the stray lines and dots!
I am a teacher and I often leaves those stray mark. I have student who lets me know when I do.
Hello
Thank goodness most school don’t use blackboards anymore. Although, the white eraser boards get dirty too! I hate when I see stains from a previous class on what SHOULD be a clean board.
I loved when teachers would put the tissues on their erasers to absorb all the chalk dust as if the board were freshly cleaned!!
Wow, you’re all lucky that you didn’t wind up on psych drugs, or maybe you did?
That would make me crazy too, I would always volunteer to clean the chalk board off for whatever teacher it was, run down to the ladie’s room, grab some wet paper towels and get the whole board sparkling! Nothing felt so good in highschool than a clean chalk board. That’s kind of sad, huh?
That drives me crazy! I always volunteer to do math problems so I could sneak in a little erasing while the teacher’s back was turned. That’s why I did way better in my math classes than my English classes, even though I hated math
I don’t have the same issue, but ever since I changed schools, from a mixed school to a girls-only school, I have increasingly become aware of this problem. In fact, most of the time girls get out of their seats whilst the teacher is talking and clean the board. The teachers are either used to it, or too surprised to comment.
I thought I was alone in this, oh goodness.
in college, I have actually gotten up and wiped off stray marks.
Ugh! I don’t have the same problem. What gets me about chalkboards is the chalkboards themselves. I don’t like the sound of the chalk hitting the board and even worse is the eraser! Even thinking about it makes me cringe inside. There is nothing right about the sound or feelings chalkboards produce.
i AM a teacher. It’s a MUST to clean the chalk board regularly. We discuss “visual clutter” in our classroom- the kids know “tidy is best”
Same here!!! i usually ask the teacher to erase it but its sooo akward when they still dont get it. if i ask again they usually get pissed haha
Me too! the one that drives me crazy is when they don’t erase the dot of the “i”…and they jus keep writing…ughhhhhh
My science teacher freshman year in high school was AMAZING when it came to the chalkboard. He scrubbed it in between everything and used a ruler to write on it. Fantastic. It was sad for a while when he had a pinched nerve in his shoulder and couldn’t write on the top half of the board. You could see it really bothered him.
i was laughing hysterically as i was reading this. I am the same exact way, i feel like i am the only one in the room that gets bothered by that , like it doesnt matter to anyone else. but it pisses me off. i cant concentrate the rest of class, and every single one of my teachers do it.
The term was also used in England and Wales for lawyers who practised in the common law courts. In 1873, however, attorneys were redesignated solicitors (which had always been the title for those lawyers who practised in the courts of equity). Attorneys did not generally actually appear as advocates in the higher courts, a role reserved (as it still generally is) for barristers.

YES!! Why can’t they just erase EVERYTHING?!? Is it so hard???
OMG!!! you would love my World History teacher! he writes SUPER neat for a guy, and even for girls, and he always finishes circles perfectly and erases everything on the board! one time he didnt do a circle perfectly (he left about 1/2 inch not finished) and kept on teaching. after a little while he goes back and finishes it and said “for all of you who that bothers, cuz i hate it too.” he is my absolute favorite teacher! my math teacher also erases everything, but he yells EVERYTHING so that totally cancles that out!
I’m a teacher and I totally agree about the messy board, but give some consideration to the difficulties involved. It’s impossible or nearly so to clean a board completely with each erasure. Often I have to write, erase, write, erase, many times in a lesson. The erasers get dirty, chalk dust builds up, and the boards in my classroom are quite old. Whiteboards really aren’t much better – the ink builds up, some colors stain the boards, the markers’ smell annoys some students, and the residue from them stains clothing. Smart Boards solve these problems – I keep begging them to install one in my room.
This is hilarious! I’m the same way. I’m in college now and I still can’t concentrate if my professor missed even a spot of chalk or marker when earasing !

Oh gosh! I hate that! I also get hot and have headaches but i get this sudden urge just to jump up there while he/she is talking and erase the bored.
board* sorry. neurotic about that too . lol
I’m a teacher and I always try to make sure I erase those marks. I used to hate that when I was a student. I teach virtually now and it’s soooo much easier on my neurotic chalkboard issues.
When a teacher does a bad job of erasing the board, you can sometimes see images in the smears. Once I was in class extremely bored, and the smears on the chalkboard took to a faraway land.
