the prom
I can’t stand when people say “prom” as in “I’m going to prom.” You don’t go “to store,” you don’t go “to mall,” why would you go “to prom??”. You “go to THE prom.” UGH.

well, buster goes to army.
I can’t stand this crap either!!! urrghh! i never understood it. just like i can’t stand when people say “my mom came to my work” ??!?! wtf? your mom didn’t come to your work, she came to your job, tard.
well, buster goes to army.
WIN.
You don’t go to the Wal-mart…
but you do go to “the store”
sabrina, “store” isn’t an actually name of a place, therefore you can add the “the”. you wouldn’t say i’m going to the exxon, but you would say i’m going to the gas station.
Come to Southern California, where we use “the” in front of highway names. For example, “Are you going to take the 405 all the way up?”
In Northern California, you don’t get any of that, though.
What about the Brits? They say “go to hospital.” That one drives me nuts!
That’s all fine and good, but expect a punch in the gut if you ever say, “The Homecoming.”
It’s right up there with “my car needs fixed” or “his hair needs cut”. I think anyone who says that is on the dope.
I agree with ‘burp.’ You would say ‘the’ with “I go to the store,” because ‘store’ is just a generic name for it. If you’re saying the actual given name, you don’t need ‘the.’ You would say, “I’m going to Wal-mart.” ‘Prom’ is the actual title of the dance, therefore you can say, “I’m going to Prom.”
but you do go to hospital… thats the same as ‘going to the hospital’
you dont say ‘do you need to go to the hospital?’
that takes longer than ‘do you need to go to hospital’ and its just stupid..
but im australian so maybe its just us..
What about “I’m going to school”? You don’t say “I’m going to the school”
Prom is short for promenade, which is a verb not a noun. Articles of speech do not belong in front of verbs.
This just sounds to me like the person needs to say/hear “I’m going to the work.” It is something specific so you don’t need to further specify
Prom is not a place like the store or the mall, but rather an event.
