I can’t talk to people if they are not making eye contact with me, or at least looking my direction. If I do, I feel they are not listening to me.

I have the opposite problem. I don’t take the hint when people really are ignoring me, and even if I do, consciously knowing that they don’t care about what I’m saying (and certainly won’t remember it in 20 seconds’ time), I must finish my thought or anecdote before I can stop talking.
Oh, that includes if the room becomes empty. I’ll still stand there, literally talking to no one, lowering my voice to an ashamed mumble, but still finishing the stupid paragraph.
I just want to know that I exist above my shoulders. They don’t need to look directly in my eyes — that is kinda creepy. I used to know this kid who would never look at my face. I asked him to look at my face and he said he was looking at my shoes…the angle his head was tilted at and his distance from me made this impossible.
