escalator hazards
Whenever I’m on an escalator, I have to jump across or take a big step over the last step before it goes under the metal part at the end. I do this because I’m afraid that my shoelaces might get caught in them and I’ll be “eaten” by the escalator.

I had this fear for a long time, until I told my father, and he explained that my shoelace got actualy stuck once when I was 6 when we were on vacacion in spain.
Now I know why I hate spain and the end of escalators.
Several children’s feet have been caught this way when they were wearing Crocs (i guess the shoes are too soft and do not slide over the grill, but get pulled under instead). I recall one child lost a few toes. Your fear is very valid.
This actually happened to me once! I had to be pulled out by friends in front of the whole shop. Very embarrassing and ruined my new shoes. But I wouldn’t say I fear escalators now.
i actualy fell over at the top of an escalator, my jeans gots ‘sucked in’ so did my knees and now i have two identical scars and weirdly im not afraid!
Many people are scared though, my friend refuses to go in shops that only have escalators – you are not alone!
I used to be afraid of them. One time my Mom and Sister went onto the escalator and I got scared so I didn’t go on it.. I just watched them go up without me, then some stranger brought me up with them..
There was a RESCUE 911 episode where someone got their shoelace caught in the metal thingies at the bottom of an escalator.. It ended up taking half their body with them I think.. I remember specifically seeing the re-enactment of it.. Scared the crap out of me.
when i was little my mom told me that a little boy’s shoelace got stuck and pulled him under…and it terrified me. i used to think that i would get sucked underneath and there would be a room with other kids who got pulled under too and we would be stuck there forever. yes…i was a creative little girl…i now know that that wont really happen :p
ah! this happened to me once when i was young. i was with my father, and my boot laces were stuck in the escalator. My father is deaf, so he didn’t hear me screaming. I stood there for a minute trying to get it out when this stranger ran up to me and cut my lace off.
and all i think about when i remember this is why did he have a knife in the mall?
I remember that episode of Rescue 911 too. I spent years jumping over the last step.
this happened to me recently. My shoelace wasn’t even undone, but there was enough touching the ground that the tip got caught. The lace got yanked so hard it ripped the shoe.. I got a fifty dollar voucher from the mall if I signed a form releasing them from any responsibility.
I should never have been allowed to watch Rescue 911 as a kid! That show made me terrified of so many things! I can remember certain episodes as if they really happened to me. I was so afraid of that show, yet compelled to wach it each week. (and yes, I remember the escalator episode and it made me terrified of my shoelace getting caught in an escalator)
