When talking with my boyfriend, I cannot stand it if he calls me the same pet name after I’ve already called him one (or vice versa), like: “I love you, sweetie” then “I love you too, sweetie.” It just feels… wrong. It makes me nervous and uncomfortable when it happens, so I have to correct it and state the sentance again using a different name to fix it.

You’re not the only one who feels this way. A friend of mine once told me that he intensely disliked the words “I love you too” as a reply to “I love you.” I don’t quite understand why though.
