do you care?
I think less of a person when they say “I could care less” as opposed to “I couldn’t care less.” “I could care less” means that you care!

drives me crazy.
It works both ways. “I could care less” is usually said sarcastically.
The horrible thing is that I hear this EVERYWHERE! On TV shows that have people who are paid to know these kinds of things. I don’t really agree that people say “I could care less” sarcastically, I think they just don’t understand the phrase and think that is the correct way to say it.
i agree completely. it drives me nutty! i usually respond by saying “really?”
I’m afraid it works both ways, as you could say “I couldn’t care less” if you cared a hell of a lot, and “I could care less” means at your current level of care, you still could care less.
The latter is correct. The phrase “I could care less” is actually even more of an asshole statement then “I couldn’t care less”. If someone says “I could care less” (and actually think about what they are saying). That person is statimg, “Wow, as much as I dont care about that, if I entertained that thought more I’d probably care even less.” ….demeaning in its literal sense. I know…
i could care less makes perfect sense. you could care less about the statement than anything else.
SAME! Whenever I tell people they should say it the other way they’re like, “….” and then I have to explain to them that if they could care less that means they care.. and people usually say that when they’re talking about something they don’t care about! So “I couldn’t care less” makes so much more sense.
look at it this way:
i could NOT care less vs. i could care less – which statement really says that you seriously do not care?
EXACTLY. Drives me mad.
Ha! I say “I could care less” all the time and I’ll tell you what, my ex used to argue with me about it too. And I could care less that it drove him buggy. He also used t hate it when I said, “that’s a whole nother story.”
And I’m an English major with a pretty good GPA too. Language changes people, if the common phrase is “I could care less” and it’s accepted as “I don’t care.” Then stop getting in a tizzy about it and go with the flow. Your life will be so much easier.
BTW, people probably say it because it’s easier to say. “I couldn’t care less” just doesn’t flow off the tongue as well as “I could care less.”
When you get into the big grown-up world and have a job people expect you to speak and write in proper English. Life is not “texting”…by the way!
I always say “I could care more” and then people think I’m dumb. lol.
Having been in the really real world for quite some time, and held a job in the business world for a long while. I do know how to write (and speak) proper English. I also know how to write and speak the vernacular of where I am. If something is accepted, then it’s accepted. Why try to change it? BTW, I hardly text… it costs too much.
Oh my gosh, I stopped liking Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies” just because because she says “could care less” – I thought I was crazy!
