i personally think it’s fine to neaten up the table (i work in the restaurant industry) as long as you aren’t disturbing any other diners or doing it while the rest of your group is still eating!

It’s just automatic that I do that. I never put much stock in it, until people began pointing it out. If there’s crumbs on the table I dust them onto my plate and, as some people mentioned, pile loose objects onto my plate as well. It’s just good etiquette….or maybe it’s just because I am a neat freak.

My boyfriend and I do this as well. We find that at the very least, it’s showing a respect for the venue, the wait staff, and yourself for keeping the area clean. As everyone has pointed out, being less messy won’t take jobs away from anyone and I only wish we had a society where this might even be an issue. Unfortunately, my experience with American society has led me to believe that ppl generally don’t think of others enough.

when my son was about 5 years old we had lunch at a neighborhood restaurant and were seated near the kitchen doors. when he was done eating he got up and brought his plates into the kitchen just as he did at home! the waitresses thought it was the cutest thing ever, and so did i. he couldn’t figure out what the big deal was!

I do the same thing! I have a ridiculous amount of compassion for inanimate objects. People laugh at me all the time. Plus my mother was a waitress so she just always cleaned up the table really well after we were done and it rubbed off.

Yeah, it doesn’t take jobs away because someone still has to take the plates, cups, silverware, & trash to the back anyway. It just helps with the organization of it.

Its not really taking jobs away from people…it’s just helping them out. My first job was a waitress…ever since then I at least try to put all my silverware, napkin, straw wrapper, and anything else loose on the plate that way whoever cleans the table will be able to pick it up quickly. Makes a server’s/busboy’s job much easier.

If everyone did that, there wouldn’t be a need for as many employees at the restaurant. So you are taking jobs away from people.

I’m a server, & I definitely don’t mind people doing that. It definitely makes my job easier & helps turn tables faster. Keep up the good work!
