Cut across the bag with scissors (obviously leaving about 2-3 inches room so that you can retain freshness). It's a hygiene thing. I learned it when camping with a group, from our leader person. It's way healthier (as far as germs go) to pour out what you will eat, rather than everyone reaching in with their not-necessarily clean hands.
