change under the bills, please
When I make a purchase and receive dollar bills and coins, I get upset when the cashier puts the change on top of the bills. It should be the opposite. I tell them it’s easier for the change to go in my pocket while the bills go in my wallet.

Really it’s just good form for cashiers to do it the way you describe. When they put the change on top of the bills, it’s like they’re giving a silent “screw you.”
ahhh i hate when they put it on top. i always have my hands full already then they hand me that and it just slides everywhere. it would be sooo much better underneath but what am i gonna do ask them to give the coins first? seems like a bit much.
I didn’t think of it before but change first makes perfect sense. The only advantage to the the coins on top is that you can quickly check that you have in fact been given the right change before putting it away.
One of the first things my manager taught me on my first day as a cashier was to give the change, then the bills and receipt. It pisses me off when cashiers do it the other way for all the same reasons you guys just wrote.
It’s just the opposite with me. I like to have the change on top because it weighs the bills down and I won’t drop them all over the place while I shove everything into my pocket. I hate it when the cashiers give me change first.
weigh the bills down? You often have sudden gusts of wind where you shop?
Thank god im not the only one who gets pissed off by this hahah!
woot
i can tell you exactly what caused this shift: older cash registers required the cashier to figure out the change on their own. the new registers have an “amount tendered” key which has resulted in cahsiers not being required/able to count your change back to you. since the amount tendered will say something like $6.37, they will pull the bills first and then dump the coins on top. it annoys the heck out of me. i’m sure you’ve experienced a cashier keying in the wrong amount and being completely at a loss on how to determine your change, i.e. entering $100.00 instead of $10.00 and standing there with a blank look on their face. sometimes i have to explain it to them. sigh.
I am a cashier and I always give the coin back first, because that’s the way I would like my change handed back. No one has ever complained to me but sometimes it seems to confuse my customer when I do this. Problem is, it would be hard to ask them “Would you like your coins or bills first today?” or I’d do whatever they prefer. When I make change from the till, I get the coin first because it is quicker that way and my performance is measured in part by the amount of time my till is open. Of course this is also because I know how to count back change.
I am the exact opposite, I need the change to be on top, it should go from the big dollar notes to the shrapnel otherwise it’s in the wrong order, i also hate it when customers ask you to take the change out of their wallet for them, it makes me feel like i’m stealing.
change last should be the accepted routine, as it would be beneficial in a windy environment… paperweight..:)
gees wish i read previous posts.. sorry for moot point..
I like the change on bottom because, like “your mom” said, the coins end up sliding off the bills. Then if it’s a long line and I have to rearrange it, it’s even more irritating because I know people are waiting for me to move out of their way.
No way. I like the bills on the bottom. Then the change just slides right into my pocket, and I can put the bills away. The other way, I often end up dropping the coins trying to put the bills away. It’s a hassle.
I’m a cashier and I ALWAYS give the change on top (otherwise I feel like the bills won’t be weighed down properly and either I or the customer will drop them).
i was at jfk airport just last night, bought a bottle of water and the cashier put my change on top of the ones. since i was lugging my overnight bag and coat i dropped the coins on the floor and into the gum display. if they are in your hand you can at least close your fingers without the coins spraying out. change on the bottom PLEEZE!
As a cashier, I always give the change first.
I noticed this phenomenon when computerized cash registers first appeared. Up until then, cashiers had to count the money back to customer. You had to start with the change, to make an even dollar amount, then added the remaining bills. The computerized cash registers, simply tell the cashier what amount of change to give. So they give you the bills, then the change. It aggravates the crap out of me, because the change always slides off the bills, and ends up on the ground. It is difficult to handle that way. PLEASE! Change FIRST, then bills!
Spike is right about the cashier counting your change back to you. I thought the change on top was better, but now that I’ve read all these comments and thought about it, I want my coins on top. I also want cashiers who actually know how to count change.
When I’m on cashier I usually hand over the bills first and then hold the coins out in a loose fist until the person look like they’re ready for them, then I open my fist just enough for the coins to pour out into their hand.
