constant efficiency
If I’m going from the kitchen to the bedroom, I look around for stuff that needs to be put away, and try to have my arms full each direction. I feel inefficient if I “waste” a trip to another room empty-handed. It’s not like I live in a big house, either.

I think that’s great – saves wasting hours trying to find stuff that hasn’t been put back where it belongs or my usual HUGE clean up when nothing can be found at all.
My guess is that you’re probably female. Most women are socially “trained” this way by their mothers, I think. Or at least socially trained to do the mental work of housekeeping, which is why they end up arguing with men if they live together later in life. Women are more likely to notice all the little things that need to be done, and men are less likely to notice them or care, because of this lifelong training. I do this too, but I was taught that it’s just a way of life to keep the house clean; not a neurosis.
