i’m so polite i’m not going to correct you
I’m from Northern Ireland and I travel a lot with my work and when I go to other countries (Americia espeically) they can never tell where I’m from. They always guess Ireland or England and it annoys me so much but I can’t correct them. I just go along with it because I think it’s rude to correct someone I just met. I can only correct them if I’ve known them for a while that way it doesn’t seem so bad.

I understand that its a different country (im irish myself) but isnt it close enough that they guess ireland?
and i dont like correcting people either but if you just throw a “north” out when they guess ireland they probably wont care
hmm it seems to me tht this person is shy and suffers a bit of an identity crisis nd tht the only thing there sure of is tht ther NORTHERN irish, yes just irish is close enuff but mayb this person c’s northern ireland as ther home country and feel so strongly bout it tht ireland wont do but i agree if they just add northern on top i dnt think ppl will care this person need to relax
um, it’s spelled America. but anyway, has it occured to you that most americans (i am one) find irish or english accents quite charming and aren’t that concerned about what street you live on, metaphorically speaking? when you are in america can you tell if we are from california or nebraska or maine? probably not and it’s ok with us! slainte!
ummm teachincal northern ireland is a seperate country to regular ireland and im pretty sure this person justs want people to recognise that i mean most americans are very patriotic sometimes ridiculously so I’m sure this person is just being the same thing patriotic for northern ireland and people will understand that no reason to be so shy about it
I think it’s good stuff to politely correct on these sort of things. not out of patriotism or anything, but just to pass on knowledge in general. why let someone go on with incorrect information?
i completely agree — especially with the “politely” aspect. it seems like this person is just so pissed about the whole world not knowing the difference…is it that big a deal? this territorialism is what causes so many problems in the world, don’t you think?
ok maybe I put it wrong it’s not really patriotism it’s just being tierd of being mistaking you for being from a place your not and yes it is a big deal for some considering all the problems northern ireland went through in the “troubles” in which it only now has settled on a compromise
Exuse me but “this territorialism is wat causes so many problems in the world, don’t you think?” NO i don’t think cuz this is not territorialism wanting ppl to no the difference between ur country and another is hardly territorialism its a perfectly innocent request many americans wud get pissed off if they wer mistakin for canadians so wtf is the problem, spike u pretty much accused this person of being territorist jus because they regurd themselves as Northern irish and not irish WTF!! wat part of wat this person has said is territorial
i wasn’t accusing the writer of anything — just suggesting that in the big picture of things it might not be worth all that anxiety. people are really the same everywhere — why do we have to put labels on everyone regarding politics, religion, race, etc?? i just found it a little overboard.
then wat was with the “this territorialism is wat causes so many problems in the world, don’t you think?” anyway how is it overboard all the person said was they wer annoyed of bein mistaken for Irish or English but wer to shy to correct anyone I don’t think that y the person has anxiety i think they just want to make good first impressions thats all. To be honest i think this has been blown completely out of proportion and sum ppl attmitedly myself icluded hav read waaay to much into this.
P.S i don’t think this person was tryin to “label” themselves they just want ppl to no the right country they r from which is fair enuff, isn’t it.
Um. I can hardly read the comments on this thread because of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. But I suppose that’s worthy of another topic altogether?
In keeping with the subject at hand, I rather think that saying Americans would be offended to be called Canadian is comparable only in ignorance to folks from Ireland and those from Northern Ireland. Apart from obvious geographic difference. I mean, really? Such an openly ignorant generalization? Wow….za…. =P
“only in ignorance to the differences between folks from Ireland and those from Northern Ireland.” Edit fail.
