you don’t swim alone
I can’t swim in my pool alone. I’m always afraid a shark will appear and eat me. Or the ghost of a former resident of my house. Or an alien.

you have your OWN pool and you can’t swim alone? you have your OWN POOL??
If you put your head under water while alone then the *whatever* will show up and kill you. The thing I fear is that plastic will magically appear just at the top of the water, and when I try to bring my head up for air I will not be able to.
It is an irrational fear. I realize that. I am sure the OP realizes that as well. It is still a fear, and it affects the way we act. I will not swim in any pool alone, never mind if it is mine or not.
this is by far one of the most interesting irrational fears i’ve ever heard of. any ideas, both of you, how this started? a scary movie seen as a child? mean siblings scaring you in the pool? one of the best weird pool scenes was a twilight zone where a little bro & sis swim to the bottom of the pool to escape their bickering parents and go to this beautiful place with a nice auntie. isn’t that better than a shark?
Oh my god!!! I thought I was the only one.. I am 25 years old and still to this day cannot swim by myself. I always think something will come and kill me (whether its a shark, monster, etc). I am also terrified of deep water, even if I am swimming with other people.
Me too!! I always think it will be a shark, and it’ll come out of one of the vents, even when i’m not alone. Maybe its because i’m scared of the sea
I think scary movies and scary stories definitely have something to do with it. I have issues with the vents, stories about kids getting their hands stuck int hem stand out, but I also fear something will come up through it. Think IT just instead of the shower its the pool.
There are also various scenes in my mind from horror films, the plastic appearing over the top of the water was one…the Jason movies are chock full of water and monster scariness. There are lots of them.
I know they are irrational. I still can’t help it. I feel deep and controlling fear whenever I am in a pool and find myself alone. I also have issues with all night swimming. Lights or no lights, I can not place my body in or near a body of water while it is dark out. Of course, I also won’t step out of bed without *some* light on, but that is a whole ‘nother neurosis entirely.
don’t you know that if you stay standing on the black line in the pool nothing (sharks, seamonsters et al) can get you! everybody knows that.
I have the same fear, but instead of a shark it is a snake or dangerous or reptilian creature hiding in the deep end of the pool. Highly Plausible.
I almost drowned as a small child and it spawned all kinds of water-related fears so I TOTALLY get it.
I’m most afraid of a zombie. I have to put my head under water a lot to make sure no zombies snuck in the pool.
haha me too or a dead body will float up and grab me
We had an aboveground pool, and the whole time we were growing up, my brothers used to wait till I was on the side with no ladder then jump out and scream “JAWS!” to watch me swim like a maniac to the ladder. It’s not an irrational fear – it could happen. I also have trouble taking a bath when no one else is home, just in case.
I can`t swim in a pool alone too! I am afraid that a weird genius professor has genetically manipulated sharks in a tank among the swimming pool and when I am in the pool they will come out and eat me alive…so I guess I get that from my older sister. she told me as I were younger that “IT” is living among the swimming pool.
